Chapter Seven
Kimi was back in class Friday and looking pretty in jeggings and a peasant top. I felt really awkward around her, but spoke as I walked to my desk first period. Her mood registered as flat, or maybe numb was a better word. It was like she'd locked down her emotions and was simply going through the motions.
That made me sad for her.
After lunch, I walked to the brain games annex alone. Tomorrow was going to be a big day for a lot of reasons. I was ready to do anything that might prepare me for it. Ms. Carr met me at the lab door. "Hello, Caleigh. How are you?"
I mumbled something in reply.
"I thought it would be a good idea for you to practice reading the emotions of real people this afternoon. I brought along some volunteers." She nodded toward a girl I didn't know, Annajoy, and a boy that I sort of did, Dominic the dull. Her tone hinted that they'd been volunteered, not the same thing at all. Annajoy, an attractive bottle blond wearing a short stretchy dress and knee socks, didn't take her eyes off me. As for Dominic, he preferred his view of the floor.
I refrained from sending out feelers even though I wanted to. If Dominic's mood was as blank as before, he'd definitely be a challenge. But wasn't that what I needed if I wanted to get better at this? "Is Miles going to hypnotize them?"
"No. We'll practice much the same as we tested. I think you'll do fine."
For some reason, I suddenly got a very bad case of the nervous jitters. My stomach felt queasy. My hands shook. I almost felt lightheaded. "Where is he?"
Ms. Carr, busy with the tablet she held, delayed answering for a few seconds. "Miles? In the communications room. Why?"
"Do you think you could spare him long enough to help me?"
"Empathy isn't one of his talents, Caleigh."
"No, but he's got a level head—" Was I really using my Dad's favorite descriptor? "He, um, keeps me grounded." I saw the quick look Annajoy and Dominic exchanged. Had I just started the latest school rumor? Great. Just what I needed, and I could only blame myself. Why had I asked for Miles? I mean, what was I thinking?
Thinking? Me? That request had been spewed without a prompt from my brain and was very telling.
"Very well. I'll get him. You three should go into the room across the hall. Everything is set up in there. Dominic and Annajoy, you've already been briefed. Any questions?"
There weren't.
"Good luck."
